“Social Media, Public Space, and Emerging Logics of Aggregation” Blog Post

The introduction of social media influenced the new century in many ways. One change the world faced was the evolution of the dynamics behind social movements. Compared to the older forms of social gatherings and community alliances, the new development of interconnected social media platforms has shaped the idea of public spaces. With how fast news spread via social media, many platforms are being used as a substitute for physical gatherings. In addition, with the current pandemic, many students have been obligated to implement more web-based platforms for communication and social awareness projects. Another example we see from this change is the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. The impact of the movement has spread faster through social media. Furthermore, the amount of activism and awareness surrounding the movement has also spread wider than before. Although many people disagree to acknowledge the connection between social media as a public space. I believe that social media platforms can 100% be seen as a form that represents a public space. Many apps such as TikTok, and Instagram have risen to become some of the most influential and worldwide forms of communication of our time. As a result, the app's approach to complete privacy has been revoked due to its large audience, but the improvement in widespread influence on society has captured the eyes of the world.
