“Libraries as Spaces Between Us: Recognizing and Valuing the Third Space” Blog

A place of semi-private communal space can be described as the "third space." A library for example can be named the third space as it is an in-between space between heavy life and total isolation. Without the constant rush for anything physical, the image of a library and a librarian stand as quiet places where stress can be relived. Many people need a third space in their lives. Humans endure heavy amounts of stressful anxiety that has the power to overcome what life is really about. A relaxing environment with positive emotions and thoughts can be very beneficial when it comes to leading a happy life. Although libraries are considered to be third spaces, throughout the years, they have been evolving from being non-profit constructions to proper businesses with growth potential. As many other community centers are trying to stay afloat by being non-profit organizations, the pressure of the busy world has collided itself with third spaces. In addition, the introduction of technology and digital fields has been replacing the need for the physical library space. Instead of picking up and reading a book at a library, many readers are transitioning to being at-home readers, or not reading at all. The academic school districts are also another example that displays a change. Although schools did once provide a library space for students to borrow books, the system has now changed to loan laptops, ipads, and tablets for educational reading. The human race runs on energy, and the natural balance is needed by all aspects that lead to a healthy lifestyle. The third space is one that provides that lifestyle.
